Conch Republic Independence Days
April 28, 2010

Our Conch Republic Independence Celebration concluded last weekend with the Bed Races and the symbolic battle on the water between the U.S. Coast Guard and the Conch Navy.  The Curry Mansion Inn has had an entry in every Bed Race.  Edith is the Grand Marchioness of the Conch Republic and was featured in the 2 parades this year.
The Conch Republic was formed in April, 1982 when the U.S. Border Patrol set up a blockade on the 18 mile stretch on US1 heading up to the mainland.  Everyone had to prove U.S. citizenship to procede to mainland Florida.  The people of the Florida Keys decided that if the U.S. was going to treat us as a foreign country we might as well be one!  The Conch Republic was born.  Fifteen minutes after declaring our independence, we surrendered and asked for financial aid!  This week long event is zany fun with several different events.  One of the most unique is the Drag Race (we are not referring to vehicles), those girls can really run in 5 inch stilettos!  The Taste of Key West was last weekend and was a very tasty event with over 150 food and wine booths.
This weekend is the Songwriter’s Festival which brings many talented musicians to Key West.  There are great performers in small bar stages that make for an intimate experience all over town.
May 21 is the second annual Spring Poker Run and then Memorial Day.  In the summer it is hard to decide whether to play on land or hit the water.  Summer is fishing, snorkelling and diving time!
